Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Cultured Wax different from other candles?
Two key factors: 1. We are committed to sustainability, evidenced by our unique use of rapeseed wax, the reusable virtue of our containers, and the recyclability of our packaging. 2. We are committed to enriching our community, thereby strengthening the fabric of our culture…the inspiration for our name! Every month we donate a percentage of profits to a cause that helps the environment and/or people in need. Click here to see the charity we are currently focused on this quarter. If you’d like us to consider donating to a charity you’re passionate about, let us know! Contact us using the contact form on our site, or via Instagram.
  • Why do your candles look slightly different?
Cultured Wax candles are all hand made in small batches and may show slight differences between one another, but they are all equal in beauty, quality, and aroma. Candles are made with natural ingredients and sometimes their scent and color may vary slightly depending on when the plants are harvested. Dark essential oils and/or fragrances can color the wax slightly.
  • Why are there gaps between the wax candles and the concrete container?
You may see this on occasion due to variance in the hand-pouring process. This is normal, caused by temperature variations and is simply due to the expansion and contraction of the wax. You will notice that candle appearances change when they are burned and even when just sitting in your room due to fluctuations in ambient temperatures. This characteristic is normal and does not affect the quality, consistency, or performance of the candle when burned properly. Natural wax candles are very sensitive to temperature and occasionally cracking can occur on the surface of the wax, but again this does not affect performance.
  • Are your products or any of the ingredients used in the products tested on animals?
No, products not are tested on any animal. Cultured Wax ensures that all raw materials used are cruelty-free and ethically and sustainably sourced direct or via reputable suppliers with commitment to cruelty free procurement of ingredients.
  • Can you tell me what your candle wicks are made from?
All the wicks in Cultured Wax candles are flat-braid, cotton-core wicks designed to promote a clean burn and minimize mushrooming from carbon buildup. Cotton wicks are free from lead, tin silver or paper strands, which are common in other candle wicks. Useful Tip: If the candle is allowed to burn for sufficiently long enough for the wax to melt to the edge of the candle container on each burn, it will burn all the way down to the bottom of the container without tunneling and there will be very little waste. Take a look at Candle Care for burning tips and advice.
  • What are your candle containers made from?
Cultured Wax candles are made from molded concrete, making them very strong and thermally shock resistant, meaning the concrete can resist extreme changes in temperature (boiling/freezing) and won’t crack when exposed to hot or cold temperatures, making it very safe for burning candles. Concrete vessels are elegant, beautiful and long lasting, making it ideal for reuse over and over again.
  • How do I clean the candle containers?
You can wash any residual candle wax out of the candle containers easily with warm soapy water.
  • How to use and care for my candle properly?
Burning Instructions: Trim wick to 1/4 inch before lighting. Keep candle free of any loose materials including matches, wick trimmings, lint, and debris. Only burn the candle on a level, fire resistant surface. Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Remember that wax is a fuel and if you burn your candle for too long, it will start to burn faster. Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time and cool for at least 2 hours before relighting. To prevent fire and serious injury: Burn candle within sight. Keep away from drafts and vibrations. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Never burn candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Do not burn candle all the way to the bottom of the container, allow at least 1cm of wax at the bottom then discard or reuse the vessel. Optimizing your candle experience: The first burn of a candle is the most important. Ensure that the first burn is long enough that the wax on the surface of the candle has melted into a wide melt pool, ideally to the edges of the container. It's best to light the candle when you have time to do this. Candle wax has a memory and if you don’t allow your candle to burn to the edges of the container on the first burn, it might create a memory ring (also known as tunneling). Once a candle has a memory ring, on every subsequent burn the melted wax pool will burn to the diameter of the memory ring and ‘tunnel’ down the wick rather than burn evenly out to the edge of the container. If this happens, the wick can eventually drown in the wax and have trouble staying lit. To prevent this, avoid storing candles in cold or drafty areas and allow them to come to room temperature before burning them. If tunneling does occur, our preferred method to fix is: 1. First, extinguish the flame if lit and allow to cool. 2. Place the candle on a clutter-free, fire-safe, level surface. Use a hair dryer to carefully melt the entire wax surface to the edge of the container. Use a low setting and hold the hair dryer far enough away to avoid spattering any wax.
  • Are Cultured Wax products suitable to use during pregnancy?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is recommended that you seek medical advice from your medical professional, such as an OB/GYN before using any products containing essential oils or fragrances.
  • Do your products contain any allergens?
Some essential oils and fragrances contain natural components, which are classified as allergens such as ‘Limonene’ which is a common skin allergen found in most essential oils. Where a product contains an allergen(s), it will be specified in the product description on the shop page. For nut allergies, we consider ourselves to be a safe option as our proprietary blend of rapeseed wax is not intentionally made with, or in contact with, any nuts. However, as our wax raw material is imported from overseas, we cannot guarantee that our wax has not come into contact with nut products along the supply chain journey. Therefore, we are not responsible for any allergic reactions caused by contact with our candles, or by any intended or unintended use of our candles.
  • Why is a product ‘sold out’ if you make to order?
Our products are made to order. When an item is marked as ‘sold out’, it usually means that a raw material or packaging component is out of stock and that particular candle scent can’t be made at that time. Follow us on Instagram to get notified when product becomes available again.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
Cultured Wax accepts the major credit cards Visa, MasterCard, American Express as well as direct PayPal account payments and Apple Pay.
  • Do you ship outside the U.S.?
Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to ship outside the United States. As we continue to share our candles and grow our business, we expect to scale capacity and enable international shipping in the very near future! Stay connected to our Instagram to be notified as soon as this becomes available
  • Do you have a brick and mortar store?
Not at this time, but occasionally Cultured Wax will exhibit at events, fairs or pop-up stores. Updates are posted on Instagram so be sure to follow us to stay connected!
